i dremt i was watching a documentary about the jazz trumpeter CHARLES TOLLIVER -- or rather, the dream was the documentary, if that makes sense

in my dream, tolliver -- who is no figment -- walked from unknown nowhere into all-american celebrity in the mid-60s, one of 112 survivors of a catastrophic flood when the mississippi burst its banks... the documentary had footage of the survivors walking up out of the waters, in great crowds, and there at the centre of the crowd, tolliver, stripped to the waist and carrying his trumpet

grimly, his country-wide television celebrity sparked an unpleasant racist backlash, and for years he's endured charges that he had somehow faked his plight, if not the flood itself

in the flood footage he looked young and handsome -- but the doc was looking back over a long career, and sad to say in more recent photos (in my dream) he had in fact become grandpa simpson

in waking life, where only the fact that he plays trumpet has definite factual basis (and perhaps his youthful looks, but i haven't checked that), i feel abashed enough by the way my subconscious feels it's ok to just say any old thing about ppl, that i'm going to track down tolliver's music, which as far as i know, i don't know

Apparently never lived anywhere near the river.

Last night I saw this entry and thought "blah I NEVER have dreams like this" but then I went on to have one! Involving the Arditti quartet playing Nono, a pretty woman, two disruptive guys and Ian Penman!
