a funny thing about advice...
... is that
a. yes yes everyone is basically talkin abt THEMSELVES and stuff that (just) happened to them
b. this is GENUINELY USEFUL INFORMATION even when not actually DIRECTLY PERTINENT (bcz it's good to rule things out also)
c. i am an alien human = i want to be loved
d. i am human = the catastrophes and humiliations of others make me feel less rubbish
e. esp. those of the "blimey at least THAT's not what just happened!" variety

ps i am in a good mood currently but keep the stories coming!

Dear Mark, you should not wait until the last minute on a piece and then with a few hours left decide to do a whole different piece (if this is what you do).

Dear Mark, next time you change apartments in Denver you should not get all upset about moving from a bigger apartment to a smaller one that looks a lot better even if it doesn't have enough closet space (if you're ever interested in getting an apartment in Denver and then changing it).

Dear Mark, I would advise you to keep a rolling list of your favorite new songs and post it several times a year, spending a minimum of one hour a day (see item number one above) trying to decide if Paula DeAnda's "Easy" is better or worse than Linda Sundblad's "Lose You." Also, you should get upset when magazines print their year-end polls before the year ends or even when they set deadlines for poll submissions before the end of the year.

Dear Mark, you should debate with yourself whether to revert to 25 pushups this morning and slowly work your way day-by-day back up to 40.

When you get the chance, you ought to marvel at the fact that Dave Hickey likes On The Road quite a lot but also takes potshots at Hunter Thompson's Fear And Loathing books. (Nails the man's casual dislike for people who work menial jobs. Also Thompson's penchant for spraying rooms with a fire hydrant when the truly wise people in the room are trying to determine which women in it are Robert Mitchum fans and how to have sex with them.) You might well agree with Hickey, especially if, like me, you've read Thompson's pompous invective but have never read a word of Kerouac.

I hope you find this advice useful.

Yr pal,

Frank
