wiki-illiam q18 and last
18. During 2007:
i: what form of confectionary bothered Zaheer?
ii: which ensemble rubbished Pomp and Circumstance?
iii: who reluctantly accepted the rust-proof qualities of bronze?
iv: where did hyoid misrepresentation cause multinational distress?
v: which herb has withered leaving memories of a north London diet?
vi: whose investiture has recalled a previous recognition of bovine excellence?
vii: where has a noontide run eclipsed Cecil’s eighty year old record?
viii: who spoke of unrivalled love of life, laughter, fun and folly?
ix: which piscine Mandarin scholar has become the 26th?
x: who has progressed from KGB via MI5 to CMG?

the rules:
a: nice full answers and anecdotes if poss
b: say if googled or no; leave time for non-googlers to play
c: obviously look ahead at future questions if you want
d: don't bring in confirming or dissenting answers from other fora until next set is up and running

i never remember any of these tho i recall ii happening -- viz last night of the proms live troll shenanigans

no but there WAS a weird addition to the group of cartoons, being touted in some muslim countries, of a not very clear photo of a man dressed as a pig -- which wasn't one of the cartoons at all, but a promo pig of some dutch clown and children's actually dressed as a pig (and nothing whatever to do with islam)

(how it got there is as mysterious as the ernie out of bert and ernie being on some celebratory posters of bin laden)

No a CMG is a gong (i.e. a medal).

Oleg Gordievsky is the answer (I googled this one). Good anecdote: Putin gonged a British defector (Blake) in 'retaliation'!

ix. Have googled this one, and can give a hint: the fish alluded to in the q is described by wp like this:

"The ____ (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) is a small fish, a widespread member of the family Cyprinidae.

The ____ is a bentho-pelagic freshwater fish, widely spread in Europe and middle Asia, around the basins of the North, Baltic Black, Caspian and Aral seas. It has been artificially introduced to Ireland, USA, Morocco, Madagascar, Tunisia, New Zealand, Canada and Spain.

Morphologically, this species is very similar to the Roach (Rutilus rutilus), with which it can be easily confused. It can be identified by eye colour (deep blood-red as opposed to yellow) or counting the soft rays in the dorsal fin (8-9 compared to 10-12). Confusingly, these species can hybridise, producing intermediate forms. The ____ can also hybridise with the carp bream Abramis brama.

In New Zealand and Canada it is considered a pest fish due to impacts on native species."
