maybe. Smithfield was an execution site at one time - e.g. William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered there (tho' acc. to Wiki they stuck his head on a pike atop London Bridge!)

There used to be a Kensington Canal but now the West London Line runs along it down to Croydon! Why am I so pleased by this?

I wondered if there might be another Union canal in London w/o the "Grand" bit in it's name... there's the Hertford U.C., which apparently links the Regents and the River Lea/Lee Navigation. Could this be the answer? (Seems a bit complicated compared to some of the other answers.)
