ichabod is I CHING and so am i!
ok i have a TECHNICAL QUESTION abt CHINESE FORTUNE-TELLING

a. the nice big pingwing edition i bought in the surprsingly large NEW AGE & CRYSTALS section of shrewsbury waterstones describes how to use coins
b. but the coins it describes are CHINESE = have a hole in and are inscribed only on one side
c. is it "ok" to use non-chinese coins?
d. if so which is yin and which is yang?
e. the first time i did it i decided i didn't like the fortune i got so i decided i had got yin and yang "muddled up" -- ie queen's head on a pound coin is NON-inscribed side in my (conveniently revised) opinion
f. i want some yarrow stalks where can i get em
g. this post is an AVANT GARDE HOMMAGE to JOHN CAGE so bug-off explanationists

other things i discoverd:
i. haha the woman in the traditional chinese medicine stall in the lower pride hill mall has NEVER HEARD OF THE I CHING and doesn't consider it either chinese or in any way worth her time and non-scorn
ii. the woman in the aromatherapy stall was "just the receptionist" and looked blankly
iii. i drew a blank at all the 'likely to stock a dreamcatcher" type shops in the whole of mediaeval scrobbesburg and no one had yarrow stalks -- best mumsy reply (in sacred moon): "it might be worth trying PAST TIMES as it's christmas"

ah see i had a ~*coin collection*~ to choose from at the time. dunno what I'd do now though.

there's an argument for pennies picked at random from your change pocket that you'll be soon to discard?

because too much yin or yang switches over, to keep the tao balanced

Here in Canada I use pennies and the head is yang, always (in this case, it's the Queen). I flip three at a time and three heads = straight line with cross through it, two heads is just the straight line. (And three maple leaves is yin with a circle drawn in the middle, two maple leaves is a broken line). If you do get any threes then you have two readings, which shows the situation is changing, or will change, and the book will tell you how (first line being the bottom one, on up to the sixth).

The people who do the Introducing/For Beginners series Icon have a nice I Ching book that maybe that lady needs to read. Haha!

um i think i misgrasped the "changing situation" element of the reading because i had FOUR possible readings -- ie three cross/circle type lines

which do i pick as the actual "will change" direction when there's more than one?

There are indeed four situations:

_ _ (normal yin)

___ (normal yang)

_x_ (overbalanced yin which then in the second reading changes into ___)

_(_)_ (overbalanced yang which then in the second reading changes into _ _) (that's supposed to be a circle through the straight line)

All lines that are overbalanced change at once to make the new reading. Usually a few do, though it is all up to chance (mais oui).

1. original hexagram
2. individual meanings of overbalanced lines (in context of hexagram 1)
3. 'resolved' hexagram

haha did you ask the woman in the aromatherapy stall because she was ASIAN or because she was selling OTHER DUBIOUS MATTER?

it doesn't matter what you use. but i believe i might have read somewhere a note about using something you're uh ok with, a la the recommendation elsewhere to choose a personal tarot deck and not let other people fuck around with it.
